DESCRIPTION
Pure crystalline iodine min. 99.8%
Chemical formula: I
Iodine is readily soluble in water and much more soluble in aqueous potassium iodide (Lugol's solution) and other organic solvents.
How do you make a Lugol's solution with a concentration of about 5%?
per 100 ml liquid:
- potassium iodide - 10 g ( color white),
- crystalline iodine - 5 g (black - darkens the water and gives a characteristic taste)
- distilled (or demineralized) water - available in hypermarkets and gas stations - 100 ml / g
PREPARATION :
Pour 100 ml of distilled water into a container with a lid, add 10 g of potassium iodide (white), mix until completely dissolved. Then set aside for 60 minutes. After this time, add 5 g of crystalline (black) iodine, stir intensively and leave to act for approx. 12 hours.
APPLICATION NOTES
- production of dyes,
- in photography,
- component of Lugol's liquid,
- Detection of starch in chemical analysis (iodine test),
- Iodine vapors are used to develop thin-layer chromatography plates,
- in spectacular chemical experiments
