Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is produced on the skin surface under the influence of sunlight (UV) to the greatest extent in the period from April to September, on sunny days between 10:00-15:00 with a sufficient cholesterol level. Epidemiological studies show that due to the geographical location and climate of Poland and the abuse of creams with UV filters, over 90% of the population of our country has a huge vitamin D deficiency, so its daily use plays a very important role in prevention many chronic diseases (e.g. rickets, depression, immune disorders, miscarriages, weak bones and teeth, cancer). Vitamin D3 should be supplemented throughout the year, and much more so during the time of limited access to the sun. Sun exposure during the day should also be taken into account.
Being indoors at school or at work during the hours of peak sun exposure cuts us off from the beneficial effects of the sun's rays, which is also reflected in the selection of doses during sun exposure
Supplementation should be considered.
Functions of vitamin D3:
Vitamin D3 plays a huge role in maintaining a healthy bone and dental system as it aids in the absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus. The consequence of its deficiency is the impairment and mineralization of the bones, and with it a high risk of diseases such as rickets, osteopenia and osteoporosis. Since vitamin D3 is responsible for maintaining the correct concentration of calcium in the blood, which is essential for the transmission of nerve impulses and muscle contractions, it also affects the proper functioning of the nervous and muscular systems. Vitamin D3 and calcium can help prevent high blood pressure and related diseases.
In addition, vitamin D3 is responsible for maintaining proper levels of protein, which is part of the "good" HDL cholesterol. People with higher blood levels of cholecalciferol have higher HDL levels (compared to people with low serum levels of this vitamin). It has been proven that vitamin D3 is essential for the proper functioning of cells & # 946; pancreatic islets. Vitamin D3 stimulates insulin secretion and thus maintains the correct concentration of glucose in the blood, which can prevent type II diabetes. Importantly, the effect of vitamin D3 on insulin action in skeletal and adipose muscle cells is also calcium dependent. Adequate vitamin D3 levels are crucial for the health of allergy sufferers. In allergic diseases, cholecalciferol increases the production of anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which are produced by immune cells and have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. People with allergic conditions such as hay fever, bronchial asthma, or those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should maintain adequate levels of vitamin D3, as a deficiency increases the risk of respiratory infections. Vitamin D3 is important for the proper functioning of the nervous system and well-being. Adequate vitamin D3 levels can protect against depression, bad mood and dementia. Low vitamin D3 levels can cause discomfort, fatigue and depression characteristic of the autumn/winter period (4). Studies have shown that adequate vitamin D3 supplementation during pregnancy can significantly reduce the number of complications, including caesarean sections, gestational hypertension and comorbidities during pregnancy.
