The ingredient of the preparation is blue-green algae containing valuable plant proteins, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), beta-carotene, B vitamins (especially B12), iron and chlorophyll. Regular use of the preparation stimulates metabolic processes (regulates the secretion of digestive juices) and is a perfect addition to the diet of the elderly, convalescents and vegetarians. It is also recommended for gastric ulcers. Spirulina is one of the few plant sources of vitamin B12, which is normally only found in animal tissue. A teaspoon of spirulina covers two and a half times the recommended daily dose of this vitamin. Scientists speculate that the "manna" of the wandering Israelites, which miraculously appeared and was described as tasting like "wafers made of honey," may have been the dry surviving form of spirulina. While this possibility is only conjecture, there are other historically documented examples of the cultivation of this alga as an important food source. An example of this are the Aztecs and the Mayans.
