DESCRIPTION
Compared to other European and tropical honeys, Manuka honey is characterized above all by its native origin. They are only found in a few areas of New Zealand that are a natural refuge for rare shrubs of the Leptospermum scoparium genus. They are homogeneous honeys produced exclusively in New Zealand during the flowering period of Manuka shrubs, made mainly from the nectar of Leptospermum scoparium plants. These honeys should also have the following characteristics: a reasonable range of specific conductivity, a unique flavor defined as mineral, slightly bitter; strongly aromatic scent with clear notes of damp earth and heather; the presence of pollen, characteristic of Manuka shrubs, and active ingredients including: methylglyoxal (MGO™).
MGO™ is an abbreviation for Methylgloxal – a natural substance recognized by scientists as a distinctive ingredient of Manuka honey, which differs from other honeys available on the market due to its high content. Manuka Health New Zealand is a forerunner and scientific leader of the MGO™ method and a leading exporter of high quality Manuka Honey. It was the first company to introduce commercial quality determination of Manuka Honey by measuring Methylglyoxal - MGO™ (since 2007) and has had a significant impact on the scientific and official work related to the quality of Manuka Honey in New Zealand and around the world.
