Harpagophytumprocumbens is a South African plant that has been used to treat rheumatism and arthritis in human animals for many years. In Poland it is known as wolf's claw, devil's claw, satan's claw or devil's claw. Devil's claw has long been used in folk medicine to treat gout, rheumatoid arthritis and tendonitis due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Besides relieving pain in diseased joints, it also lowers blood cholesterol and uric acid, which has been shown in clinical studies. Devil's Claw is a plant that owes its name to a large, hooked fruit. For therapeutic purposes, the roots containing iridoids are used: harpagoside, procumbide, procomboside and other glycosides, as well as phenols (acetoside, isoacetoside, bioside), bioflavonoids (kaempferol, luteolin), beta-sitosterol, gentian and others. Devil's Claw has anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic and anesthetic properties. It is used for rheumatism, gout, myalgia, lumbago, and especially arthritis, sciatica. Using a frog claw has been proven to reduce swelling and pain in arthritic joints and make them easier to move.
