Diatomaceous earth, also known as kieselguhr and kieselguhr, is a natural, mineral sedimentary rock that was formed around 30 million years ago. It is a sedimentary rock composed of amorphous diatom shells free from impurities. Diatoms are unicellular algae whose petrified shells become diatomaceous earth in the cement works process. The rocks consist mainly of silicon, they are soft and formed in cold seas and lakes. The soil is white or slightly yellow in color, it is a light, porous and dusty powder. Natvita's diatomaceous earth comes from deposits in Nevada, which determines its high quality. In Poland, kieselguhr deposits are found in Łódź, Poznań, Bircza and Augustów.
This substance is used in homes as a safe and natural insecticide, cleaning and filtering agent. In industry it is used as a filter, for example in food production. It can be used as a bleaching and dehydrating agent, as well as a deodorant. It is also used as an ingredient in cosmetics. Thanks to its abrasive properties, it is used as a body and face scrub or as an ingredient in toothpaste. As a peeling ingredient, it has a refreshing and cleansing effect and is suitable for sensitive skin. It is also found in water filters, air fresheners and crop protection products.
