DESCRIPTION
It is an exogenous amino acid, so it has to be supplied to the body with food. Of all the BCAAs (three branched-chain amino acids, which include L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine), leucine is the most potent activator of the enzyme known as mTOR kinase (its activation can aid in the synthesis of muscle proteins). Leucine is metabolized into a number of metabolites, one of which, HMB, is available as a standalone supplement. Leucine stimulates insulin secretion by the pancreas, both alone and synergistically with carbohydrates, is oxidized in muscles and can be a source of energy for exercise. Leucine regulates the activity of neurotransmitter precursors in the brain and the release of enkephalins, which are thought to influence feelings of pleasure and satisfaction.
