Spirulina is a microscopic alga found in the waters of African lakes and Central and South America. It contains up to 60% protein in its composition. It is a source of natural iodine, selenium, iron, valuable B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) and unsaturated fatty acids, including gamma linolenic acid (GLA). The protein it contains consists of up to 18 amino acids, 8 of which are esogenic amino acids, i.e. those that are not produced by the body and must be supplied with food. Protein is involved in maintaining muscle mass, recovery, proper blood sugar regulation, and maintaining healthy bones. Due to its high-quality protein, spirulina is popular with vegan and vegetarian diets.
Iron, the source of Spirulina, plays a role in the body's transport of oxygen to cells. It is also involved in the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin. It also supports the proper functioning of the immune system and can help reduce fatigue. It is worth noting that this alga is better absorbed than those of animal origin. This is due to the structure of phycocyanins, which can form complexes with iron.
Iodine is involved in maintaining normal cognitive and nervous system function and helps maintain healthy skin. Iodine also contributes to the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of healthy hair and nails, the proper functioning of the immune system and thyroid, and the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Gamma-linolenic acid has a positive effect on proper blood pressure, has anti-inflammatory effects, has a beneficial effect on the appearance of hair, skin and nails, and supports immunity.
Vitamin B6, found in Spirulina, helps maintain proper energy-yielding metabolism and aids in proper red blood cell production. It helps reduce fatigue and helps maintain normal mental functions. Vitamin B12 helps in the functioning of the nervous and immune systems. It helps maintain proper energy-yielding metabolism, as well as reducing feelings of tiredness and fatigue.
